Sleep Habits for Charlotte

We did not have a bedtime routine for Charlotte and as of this week, we do. It was easy to figure out on the first kid (well, easy as in we had time to read a book about it), but then comes the 2nd and all we can do is hope she'll figure it out and go to sleep on her own because we're busy and exhausted. Well, we finally remembered that we had to build that sleep pattern with Hailey and so we began to train Charlotte this week in hopes of ever getting some time to ourselves.

We were sick and tired of going through her crying routine every night and decided to lay down the law. So far, it's working! She was taking hours to go to bed for the night, we'd be bouncing her as late at midnight some nights...
We always read to Hailey as part of her bedtime routine and Charlotte was always there for it, but we hadn't ever put her right to bed following it like we do Hailey, so it wasn't really a 'bedtime' thing for Charlotte. We decided she needed to go to bed at the same time as Hailey (probably should be earlier at this point) and so we added in brushing her gums when Hailey brushes her teeth. We moved her bed (pack n play) into our office (it had been in our room). We put her in her bed after lots of goodnight kisses from Hailey (and us), told her goodnight and closed the door. Crying would ensue. Every 5-10 minutes (depending on how loud/strained her cry was) we would go in and comfort her by patting her back and telling her it was okay and to go to sleep. We would not pick her up (didn't want to reinforce that if she cries we come running to hold her). The first couple nights were rough...she would cry and scream for over an hour. But each night, the length of time she cries has decreased! Last night she only had about 15 minutes of crying (we went in 2 times to pat her back and tell her goodnight during that period) and then, it was quiet. Pete and I high 5'ed (hesitantly since I was sure she'd be up in a couple hours), but to my surprise she slept from 9:30ish (we got a late start since we had a class at church we had just come home from) until 5 something (I don't remember exactly what time Pete said he brought her to me, but it was in the 5 o'clock hour)!!!! I fed her and took her back to her bed and went back to sleep. I was shocked that I hadn't even heard her - I must have been in a deep sleep, usually I get her and let Pete sleep through it all. She slept until 8:30 this morning and we reveled in how awesome it was that she had slept so well.
Also, I just put her down for a nap and though she cried for a while, I went in a few times to pat her back and now she is sleeping. :) Lately she's been into taking 20 minute power naps and I get no relief...but I'm happy to say that both girls are napping right now as I write this! Break out the champaign, this is something to celebrate! Let's hope this continues. I'll be very happy if it does....
